From Injury to Independence: Abani Heller’s Journey with the Re-Aktiv™ Brace

Recovering from a major injury can be a long, uncertain road—especially when it threatens your ability to do the things you love. In our latest Re-Aktiv™ Patient Spotlight, we follow the real-life journey of Abani Heller, an active father and avid mountain biker, who went from a traumatic accident to regaining his freedom—all with the help of the Re-Aktiv™ brace featuring PDE™ technology.

A Life-Changing Injury

In July 2018, Abani was mountain biking with his son at Stevens Pass, WA when a split-second miscalculation sent him crashing into the mountainside. He suffered a severe compound fracture—breaking both his tibia and fibula—and began a long road to recovery. After initial surgery, rehab was slow and painful, and the question hung in the air: Would he ever return to the life he loved?

Finding Hope in Re-Aktiv™

After a second surgery and a referral to Dr. Steven Benirschke at Harborview Medical Center, Abani was introduced to a new possibility: the Re-Aktiv™ brace with dynamic carbon spring support.

“It was literally impossible without that brace,” Abani shares in the video.

Custom-fabricated by Fabtech Systems, the Re-Aktiv™ brace offered Abani something his bulky air cast never could—a unique brace designed to offload the foot and ankle and relive pain. From the moment he put it on, he could tell it was different. Pain-free steps turned into daily walks, and eventually, full-fledged adventures.

Back on the Mountain—and Beyond

Today, Abani uses his Re-Aktiv™ brace daily—walking his dog, taking his daughter to school, and even biking the trails of Tiger Mountain, WA again. With the brace’s Posterior Dynamic Element (PDE™) carbon springs, custom-molded footplate, and adjustable cuff, Abani found the support he needed to reclaim his active life.

“I couldn’t do that daily walk without my Re-Aktiv™ brace.”

The ability to fine-tune the fit, reduce pain on the fly, and stay mobile through different terrains has made all the difference for Abani—and for others like him. Designed and developed by Fabtech Systems, the Re-Aktiv™ brace helps patients take control of their recovery and return to doing what they love—with less pain and more confidence.
